My partner and I had an absolutely fantastic stay at the Factory. We took the self catered option which gave us the perfect balance between warm and welcoming hosts and a bit of our own time and space to enjoy the great room and surrounding Kaikoura. They’ve done an amazing amount of work around town after the earthquake and we felt incredibly safe and sound during our visit to this wonderful area.
This exquisite B & B just north of Kaikoura is a gem to behold. Situated right on the beach Paul & Janet have painstakingly restored the 100 year old Dairy factory into beautiful accommodation. The 3 bedroom residence is exclusive to one party of up to six people, so totally private. With the beach in front and surrounded by mountains, the scenery is breathtaking. Tastefully decorated, with everything you could possible need,
The Factory is a must if visiting Kaikoura. It was our favourite place.
We had an amazing stay at The Factory!
The location is breathe taking, sandwiched between the kaikora mountain range and the rugged coast of Hapuku. The rooms are spacious and very tasteful!
We opted to take the self catering option and the kitchen had everything we needed along with a BBQ on the deck!
The spa bath outside is a lovely way to wind down after a day of whale watching or sight seeing in Kaikora.
Janet and Paul are beautiful hosts, true kiwis – layed back and approachable and also gave us plenty of privacy to enjoy the luxuries of the factory.
I can’t wait to have an excuse to go back!!
From the moment we arrived we felt at home in thuis beautiful equipped place. The hospitality of Paul, the owner was great and throughout our 3night stay he was always there whenever we needed help. The beds were excellent and the hottub was a joy after our outdoor activities. Certainly a place where we want to go back to.
We stayed with Paul and Janet for the third time and they are amazingly good hosts and such interesting people to chat with .There are so many extra touches which are so nice and so much appreciated .The breakfasts are outstanding and very substantial. One morning we had crayfish together with a crayfish omelette and all the trimmings. After that lunch isn’t required !!
The property is really interesting and very well equipped , and so comfortable that we were keen to eat in . There is a lovely private garden area too with the jacuzzi .
The beach is a 100 meters away and we usually manage to see some dolphins in the morning. Kaikoura was fully open for business but just quieter than it has been .
We really enjoyed our stay and plan to return next year for a longer visit and will take Paul up on his offer to go fishing.
We were thrilled to enjoy a few days at this restored bed and breakfast and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking an adventure in New Zealand near the ocean. The hosts are superb excellent. The food is delicious and the location is unbelievable.
There is no reason avoid this beautiful property because of road conditions or the recent earthquake.
What an absolutely amazing place on this earth! We had been to Kaikoura on past trips to New Zealand – we love the entire area and especially the dolphin encounter swim – but this was the first time we stayed at The Factory. We loved it so much we already have a return visit booked for next year! Absolutely incredible hosts – Paul and Janet – who take the time to get to know you and make sure you have a memorable stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our conversations over breakfast and all their great advice on the area and traveling in New Zealand in general. If you haven’t yet – check out their photos on Facebook – beautiful!
The house itself is really REALLY cool – very stylish – could be from a page of Dwell magazine. We loved all of the little touches throughout the place as well as the oasis of a fantastic backyard where we had dinner and breakfast everyday.
Have stayed at two other places in Kaikoura before this trip and will now never stay anywhere but The Factory!
What a fab place Janet and Paul have here- we loved every minute of our 4 day stay. The accommodation was spotlessly clean, well equipped , super warm and beds that we couldn’t seem to leave in the morning! The location is idyllic- peaceful and quiet ( yes the train goes by daily but we hardly noticed) and surrounded by snow capped mountains on one side and and a wonderful atmospheric ” black” beach on the other. Janet and Paul are so warm and welcoming and they went out of their way to make us feel at home and truly relaxed: we would come back after a long day with the dolphins or whales etc to clean laundry , tidy beds and ( best of all!) all the washing up having been taken care of. Paul took the time to talk to the kids about the local bird life and his fishing – the kids were excited to hold a live crayfish. Having the beach to ourselves and seeing the dolphins was an added bonus … kids loved the treehouse, the animals and we all loved the hot tub. A great place for a couple or a family stay. Thank you Janet and Paul ( I write this a week after the recent quake and I hope The Factory wasn’t damaged in any way and you are both safe and well). Thanks again, Tara and family – Singapore Xxx
The Factory should be the top on everyone’s list when visiting New Zealand and the Kaikoura area. Janet and Paul are wonderful hosts and are very helpful in every way. The Factory is a unique, and cozy B&B. Janet and Paul cook up a gourmet breakfast that will last the entire day. The facility has everything you could ask for. They even have a helicopter pad to be whisked away to your day’s adventures. The area is great place to listen to the ocean at night and go whale watching or hiking during the day. We would highly recommend adding this to your itinerary! Don’t miss out!
We were lucky enough to spend a night at the Factory and meet Janet and Paul. Stunning from the moment we walked in. The location, decor and attention to detail -but most of all the most wonderful breakfast! Can’t say enough about how fabulous The Factory is. Thanks! Will be back.
The night I spent at The Factory was an absolute highlight of my holiday !! Janet and Paul were so friendly , warm and knowledgeable about the local area . The backdrop is snow top mountains and the sea in the others direction … Sooo beautiful . They pointed us in the direction of wonderful restaurants serving the best and freshest seafood we ate all trip . The home cooked breakfast was delicious , most of the produce was local and some from their own garden :)) one night wasn’t enough !!!!
My besties and I spent a night in the Factory at Kaikoura. The BnB is snuggled between coast and towering snowy mountains with. Seals lolling on the rocks nearby and local seafood abounding. Janet and Paul are delightful hosts making us feel very much at home. The accommodation has a historic backdrop overlaid with modern and exotic decor. Its very comfortable and fun. Breakfast is simply indescribably delicious.
We came to Kaikoura with the kids to go whale watching and a few other things and stayed three days at The Factory. Janet and Paul are fantastic hosts and the property is brilliant. There was plenty of room for us and two kids (one teenager).
It is close to the ocean, and has a lovely garden to sit and enjoy a glass of wine along with a spa pool and fantastic underfloor heating which kept the whole place nice and warm on the cooler days.
We would thoroughly recommend this to anyone wanting to spend time in this region.
We had a wonderful stay at The Factory. The setting is fabulous and the hosts, Janet and Paul, are great. They have thought of all the necessary details which made our stay comfortable and enjoyable and nothing is too much for them – they even lent us their fishing gear and gave us tips on the best places to catch the fish. They are wonderful cooks and the fantastic breakfasts and freshly baked brownies on arrival were a highlight of our stay! The hot tub is also a great feature!
The Factory is a uniquely modeled gallery hotel located in a farm overlooking both the glacier mountains AND the ocean. Every detail is of exquisite taste including the beautiful ocean colored tea set, the red doors, modern cabinets, nice showers, very comfy beddings and bathrobe, the champagne glasses/lotion/etc. we’re embroiled, all accommodations are selected with care; they are useful, comfortable and classy. Oh and the jacuzzi is warmed up and cozy!
Janet and Paul, the owners are the sweetest couple! They prepared us champagne, milk etc. and super yummy chocolate (sad that we had so little time orelse we’d really like to have a meal with them before we leave). On our way out of the house one of our guys forgot where he left the keys to the car, all six of us spent forever looking for it and couldn’t find it (that was our only pair of keys, this is our first time in NZ and we only drove one car so we’re very worried). Janet and Paul helped us to check all the places and they found our keys in the trash, and became our trip saviors!
So to wrap up, if we ever want to have the best stay in Kaikoura, you NEED to come to the Factory. You will get the most amazing hosts, the most pleasant stay and the most magnificent view!
We stayed for four nights and had the most wonderful time. The Factory is full of lovely touches to make you feel welcome and pampered. We had lots of adventures in Kaikoura – seeing whales, seal cubs, and walking up Mt Fyffe for spectacular views. Can’t beat returning from a snowy hike to some time in a hot tub.
Thank you Janet and Paul for your kindness and warm hospitality. The Factory was a truly amazing place to stay and I can’t recommend it enough.
Not only is the accommodation first class (luxury fixtures/ fittings/ bedding), in an amazing setting (snow cap mountains on view from one side of the property and beach from the other), with amazing little luxuries (wood burner with plenty of fuel, huge blueray library, chocolates, home made lemonade, cheese platter, champagne and beer in the fridge and a gift when we left) but the hosts have the perfect balance of being amazingly friendly and knowledgeable whilst not being intrusive. It really was like staying with friends. Janet and Paul cooked a stunning breakfast (we had debated if the extra expense was worth it when we booked, but so glad we did – it was amazing and finding breakfast in town would have been a hassle). They also gave us fantastic advice to seek out a baby seal playground 10 minutes away which was stunning. Even down to offering to pick us up if our lemon of a hire car died on us half way back to Christchurch. Can’t recommend this place high enough, cant wait to come back – thank you!
Thank you so much for a wonderful break. We now have to leave your piece of heaven and return to travelling. This is a beautiful home in a truly stunning place. Your welcome and friendliness has made this perfect. We have loved New Zealand and this is a wonderful place’.
‘Thank you for your hospitality and this amazing place! It’s a shame we’re only staying one night but we are already making plans to return here as soon as we can! We love everything about The Factory and looking forward to more of it.’
‘Thank you so much for allowing us to share your slice of paradise. We had a great stay, super location and a unique building.’
‘Thank you for a wonderful stay! The Factory is a hidden gem in Kaikoura. We had a wonderful meal last night at The Green Dolphin thanks to your recommendation and we are so glad we got to see the seal pups under the waterfall. Many thanks!’
‘Thank you for offering such a delightful getaway. The beautiful mountains, the beach, your kindness and this amazing property. What a find! Enjoy it.’
‘Thank you so much for an amazing stay. The accommodation was the best we have ever stayed. The interior design was like walking into an inside out magazine! Your generosity will never be forgotten. Our son, the city kid, had a great time with the chooks and the treehouse.’
Nestled between the sea and snow-capped mountains, The Factory is an idyllic, restful retreat. Wake to the sounds of nature and step out of the door on to the beach. Sympathetically restored historic building with a harmony of industrial chic and luxurious soft furnishings. Attention to detail is second to none (we loved the monogrammed pillowcases and pebble door handles). Thoughtfully stocked with all you need to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenic views from each window (local sparkling wine and beer in the silver fern Smeg fridge were much appreciated). Wifi lets you stay in touch with the outside world (if you have to). Janet and Paul are perfect hosts: warmly welcoming, nearby if you need anything (yes, Paul’s coffee really is as good as everyone says), but unobtrusive as you enjoy the privacy of the self-contained luxury beachfront accommodation. Luxury is an understatement: it’s paradise.
